Probing the Chemistry of Dark Clouds
Countour Image of Dark Cloud Chemistry
The above panels show the integrated intensity maps of C^18O (J=1-0), CS (J=2-1), and SO (J_K= 3_2- 2_1) in the dark cloud core TMC-1. Note the differences in the spatial distributions of the three species. While the C^18O exhibits a rather flat distribution over the extended region, the SO tends to peak to the north of the dense ridge outlined by the box. Forthermore, the CS emission peaks in two locations, i.e. near the NH _3 peak (filled triangle) and approximately 3 arcminutes southwest of the NH _3 peak. At the cyanopolyyne peak (filled square), C^18O and SO show local emission peaks, but the CS shows none. These maps are part of a larger study of the physical and chemical properties of dark clouds underway at FCRAO ( See story).
