Source Catalog Program - CAT

This auxiliary program, is activated from the TEK4023 by typing
START CAT or START CAT (A04 optional)
or from the LEAR in the control room annex by pressing CONTROL-A on the main computer console (blue terminal) and typing:
/CAT/ACT, LM)
It has been rewritten to incorporate a few improvements, as well as eliminate some unnecessary options. Upon activation, a sign-on message is printed on the output device (by default the ModGraph terminal in the control room; if the argument A04 is given, then output is written to the serial port on the UNIX workstation which is accessible via the mterma command). A menu of possible actions is displayed. One need only type in the option number in order to proceed. Although the program is self-explanatory, each option shall be discussed below.

option 0 - Exit

Entering a zero causes the program to sign off. Alternatively, one could stop it from the TEK4023 by typing STOP CAT or from the Lear-Siegler terminal by pressing console interrupt on the computer and typing:
/CAT/ABORT
.

Option 1 - Add to File

Upon selecting this option, a brief message is printed describing the important features of adding a source to the library. An entry device is also requested by the program. The choices are keyboard, card reader, and tape. For any of these choices, the means of terminating additions is to enter a record which has a $\$\$$ in the first two columns. This is taken automatically on tape, but must be done by the user for card or keyboard entry. Input is free form (no fixed starting columns) and some of the information can be left off if the default values are acceptable. In its complete form (nothing left out), one must enter on one line, in order, separated by spaces:

  1. name-up to 12 alphanumeric character long with no embedded blanks
  2. main position right ascension (format hhmmss.s)
  3. main position declination (format ddmmss.s)
  4. reference position right ascension (format ddmmss.s)
  5. reference position declination (format ddmmss.s)
  6. VLSR in km/sec
  7. epoch
NOTE: If the epoch is entered as a negative number (e.g. - 1950.), then the position information is assumed to be L and b instead of RA and DEC, and will be converted to RA and DEC before being stored on disk.

An entry device is also requested by the program. The choices are keyboard, card reader, and tape. For any of these choices, the means of terminating additions is to enter a record which has a $\$\$$ in the first two columns. This is taken care of automatically on tape, but must be done by the user for card or keyboard entry.

Incidentally, the source cards used with the previous version of CAT can be used with no changes as long as there are no comments on them.

Option 2 - Replace File

. This option causes the attentive file to be wiped out and replaced by newly input sources (maximum number: 256). The password is required to do this to the FCRAO file. All of the information relating to input record format given for option 1 also applies to option 2. After replacement, the user is asked if he would like a listing.

Option 3 - List File

When this option is chosen, the sources in the attentive file are ordered in terms of increasing right ascension and listed either on the terminal or the Versatec printer. The listing device is chosen by the user as part of the dialog. If the Versatec printer is chosen, please be sure it is turned on and ON LINE before proceeding with the list.

Option 4 - Switch Files

There are two disk files for coordinates, the FCRAO file and USER file. The CAT program can only handle one at a time. When activated, it is "pointed" at the USER catalog. By choosing option 4, the program is pointed at the other file, and a message is printed as to the currently attentive file. Thus, calling option 4 two times in a row will get the user back to where he was.

Although both files can be listed or examined, a password is required in order to modify the FCRAO file. No such security feature exists for the USER file.

Option 5 - Delete Sources

By entering a source's name, that record will be removed from the attentive disk file. To do this with the FCRAO catalog requires the password.

Option 6 - Make Tape Copy

This option allows a user to make a save tape of a catalog for reinstatement later on. The written tape's format agrees with that requested if inputting sources from tape.

Option 7 - Plots

In this option, elevation versus hour angle plots are made for sources in the attentive catalog by typing in the names. To exit this mode, type $\$\$$ for the name.

Option 8 - Print Source

The information for individual sources whose names are typed in is printed at the terminal.

Option 9 - Change Operator Terminal

This allows one to switch the control terminal from the Tektronix 4010 to the Lear-Siegler terminal in the control room annex, or the Tektronix 4023 in the control room. Plotting will not work for any terminal except the Tektronix 4010 in the control room.
