Introduction

This chapter describes the various data-taking programs available for use with the 14 meter telescope, the combination of previously defined and new keywords required to utilize them, and examples of their use. Table 4.1 lists the programs available to the user and the keywords that are needed to display the parameters related to each type of observation. The remainder of this section will introduce keywords that affect all of the data-taking routines and will discuss the events that can cause data-taking to pause.

The following keywords are used to initiate or terminate the data-taking routines listed in column 1 of Table 4.1.

START (name)
start observing routine
STOP (name)
abort observing routine, no data is stored
END (name)
prematurely end observing routine and store accumulated data

Terminating FIVE or MAP with either STOP or END clears all offsets to their state just prior to initiation of the data-taking procedure. The keyword RESULTS followed by a device identifier, will direct printed output from some routines in the continuum mode to a device (for example, five point mapping results from program FIVE or position switching on-off measurements from PS or CAL ).

Table 4.1
Available Observing Programs

Keyword Available Modes Remarks
CAL CONT, SPEC Channel by channel Filterbank
DPS CONT, SPEC Double position switching
FIVE CONT, SPEC Five point map
FS SPEC Frequency switching
MAP CONT, SPEC Raster scan maps
APOINT CONT, SPEC Automatic Pointing and Focusing
OFF CONT, SPEC Off-source tracking and data-taking
ON CONT, SPEC On-source tracking and data-taking
PS CONT, SPEC Position switching
PLSW SPEC Polarization switching

Entering one of the above keywords causes the keywords and parameters relevant to that type of observation to appear on the screen 1 display so that parameters can be changed if desired. In continuum mode, these routines print out information which must be directed to a device designated with the keyword RESULTS (device code).
