Loading (or Reloading) the MODCOMP Computer MAX IV Operating System

After powering on the MODCOMP and its peripherals, it is necessary to load the MAX IV operating system. The same procedure is followed for "rebooting" the system.

  1. Set RUN/HALT switch on front panel to HALT
  2. Set paddle switches on front panel of MODCOMP CPU so that the two bits furthest to the right ($\char93 $14 and $\char93 $15) are ON (switch tilted up) and all other bits are OFF (switch horizontal).
  3. On MODCOMP front panel depress the buttons:
    1. MASTER CLEAR
(leftmost rocker switch, does not remain in down position)
    2. FILL
(rockerswitch next to MASTER CLEAR; does not remain down)
    3. RUN
(RUN/HALT rockerswitch; switch remains in RUN position)

You will get a message on LEAR terminal:

    K.3 SAL F39C
    DEVICE(F),TRACK,GEOM,UNIT$\char93 $,DMP$\char93 $/CHAN$\char93 $,BAUD,PARITY,DENSITY

!!! If no such message occurs, recheck switch settings, power on conditions, disk drive ready light etc. and try again from the top. If you cannot get a response after 2 tries, call the staff.

  4. It is now necessary to give the computer the location of the current version of the operating system on disk. This location is usually displayed on the front of the disk drive, the computer and the terminal.
    H0,275,20,3

The LEAR terminal will respond with:
    SATISFIED

  5. You Type: GO
and system boot will be carried out. Many messages of a welcoming nature indicate that this process has occurred.
