Education at FCRAO

University astronomical observatories have the principal responsibility for the training of the next generation of astronomers. As national telescope facilities become more and more removed from the individual scientist, it is essential to the health of astronomy that opportunities be available for hands-on training in both the development of new instrumentation and in the actual utilization of state-of-the-art research instruments. These educational activities have always been a major part of the FCRAO program and about one third of the observing time on the 14m telescope is used by students Several of the large observational programs form portions of Ph.D. dissertations. Students also continue to play an important role in the development of new instrumentation, including the new FCRAO correlator system, wide band spectrometers, and the research on HEMT amplifiers.
